Mother’s Day

My mother died on a Tuesday last August, at 4:04 pm. She opened her eyes as she took her last breath.
For years, she had asked me about my book. She would not get to see it in its finished form. And, for the longest time I didn’t know who to dedicate the book to. It was not on my radar because I had written the stories for myself, to figure out answers, to uncover meaning, to quiet a restless soul.
Not long after she died, I figured it out.

Wishing each of you, dear reader, a special day with your mother. And if she is no longer here, warm reflections of her: a favorite activity, a song, a poem, a memory that makes you smile.

This week, one of the top 30 reviewers on Goodreads — out of millions of members — reviewed Raising Athena. Five stars.
“Mylinh Brewster Shattan’s Raising Athena: A Mother and Daughter Attend West Point Thirty Years Apart is a memoir of uncommon depth, structural elegance, and emotional courage—one that earns its perfect early community rating not through the inflation that occasionally attends tightly networked early readership, but through the genuine literary and intellectual force of its undertaking.”
“A book that thinks as rigorously as it feels — and the combination is both rare and deeply satisfying.”
— Sarah Jensen, Prairie Fox Reads | #29 top reviewer on Goodreads
